“And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved their lives even unto death.” [Revelation 12:11]

In the opening remarks of Paul’s letter to Timothy, Paul briefly mentions the God of his ancestors and Timothy’s faith journey. Before we finish the rest of this chapter, we must acknowledge our spiritual walk with the Lord.

Let’s look at some Scripture to get a better understanding of the purpose, power, and how to practice telling our God-sized story with others!

Purpose

What do you think of when someone mentions their testimony? What are they testifying about?

Below are some verses about our salvation experience. Match the following verses with their reference.

  1. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

  2. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved--and raised us up  with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus...” Ephesians 2:4

  3. “For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” Romans 3:23

  4. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come in judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24

References:

  1. Romans 6:23

  2. John 5:24

  3. Romans 3:23

  4. Ephesians 2:4

What do these verses communicate about the purpose of your testimony?

Our testimony is not about us. It is about God’s redemptive work in our lives!

You are not saved from bad to good, evil to holy, wrong to right.

Your testimony is the story of Jesus raising you from spiritual death to life.

If you have asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins, believe He died on the Cross for your sins, and confess Him as your Lord and Savior, you are FORGIVEN. You are SAVED. You are made ALIVE.

In what ways do you believe your testimony is too boring or filled with too much brokenness? Explain.

Sometimes we buy into a lie declaring our stories are filled with too much brokenness or flat out too dull. But, we are raised from the dead! We are walking miracles because of God’s grace! In of itself, our redemption story is worth telling.

Besides, did you know Satan loves when we don’t share our testimonies? Let’s visit Revelation 12:11 quickly to find out the power of our journey with Christ.

Power

Open up to Revelation 12:11. What do you know about this book of the Bible?

Revelation is John’s vision of the end times. What two things does he declare will conquer Satan in the last days?

The Blood of the Lamb (Christ’s death on the Cross) and the word of our testimony.

How does our testimony conquer Satan’s end game?

It shows the world who is really in charge—the Lord. Through conquering sin and death, Satan can’t stand a chance!

Name a time you freely testify about God’s goodness and grace in your life? When was a time you felt led to, but didn’t?

The blood of Jesus ultimately defeated Satan’s wickedness. When we don’t tell our stories of God’s redemption in our lives, we prevent others from hearing the Good News of Jesus. We forget our stories are a tool to proclaim Jesus!

Proclaim

Open up and read 1 Peter 3:15-16. What does Peter say we must be prepared to do? How are we supposed to it?

Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you while doing it with gentleness and respect.

What would be an example of defending your faith while lacking gentleness and respect? Explain.

“That is so stupid. How could you believe in the Big Bang Theory?” “Why can’t you just believe? Why do you think you have to be right?”

Why is our testimony such a powerful tool in evangelism?

No one can refute it!

Have you ever told your testimony to someone? If so, how did others respond?

People can deny our religion, our Bible, our God, but they cannot dismiss our personal encounters with the Lord. The time the Lord cured your grandparent of cancer? Only God. The time the Lord brought you joy instead of fear? Only God. The time your brother was far from God, but now walks daily with Him? Only God.

Our testimonies should be a sweet, sweet gift to us this side of Heaven. Tomorrow we will unpack the specifics of YOUR testimony. But for now, end this time thanking Jesus Christ for saving you through dying on the Cross for YOUR sins!
