“Then I replied to them, ‘The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.’” - Nehemiah 2:20

God had just miraculously allowed King Artaxerxes to grant Nehemiah his request to leave Persia and travel to Jerusalem so he could rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah took a bold stand to make this request, and today we will see that he had to take another bold stand as he faced an attack of the enemy.

Read Nehemiah 2:9-10. What two men are we introduced to in these verses?

How did they feel about Nehemiah and his plan to rebuild the walls?

Read Nehemiah 2:17-20. These verses begin with Nehemiah speaking to the Jews living in Jerusalem at this time. What encouraged the Jews to join Nehemiah in rebuilding the wall?

How did Sanballat and Tobiah respond to the news that the Jews were on board with Nehemiah’s plan?

How did Nehemiah’s trust in God allow Him to take a bold stand in verse twenty?

Read Nehemiah 4:6-14. What two nations joined Sanballat and Tobiah in coming against Nehemiah and the Jews?

What did they plot against Nehemiah and the Jews in verse eight?

What two things did Nehemiah do in response?

How did Nehemiah take a bold stand against attack?

Nehemiah’s response is a model to us of how to respond to attacks from our greatest enemy Satan. First, we go to God in prayer and then we prepare ourselves for battle by putting on the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Read Nehemiah 4:15-23. What changed about the way the men built the wall after the threat of attack?

Taking a bold stand against attack means being prepared for battle. Our greatest enemy, Satan, wants nothing more than to defeat us from accomplishing the things God has called us to. We must then be prepared to take a bold stand against attack even today!

APPLY: How can you prepare right now to take a bold stand against Satan’s attack today?

Spend the next few minutes asking the Lord to help you be prepared to boldly stand against Satan’s attacks (discouragement, fear, anxiety, distraction) today.
